Perched on the edge of the Caribbean sea, the former British colony of Belize offers an intoxicating combination of virgin jungle and turquoise seas, and once you are there, you won’t come across many other Brits. Explore the lush highlands of the Cayo district, cruise down the meandering rivers, swim below waterfalls, explore the fascinating caves…the list is endless! Then head deep into the rainforest, explore the jungle by foot or boat and visit the renowned Lamanai ruins. Finish at the coast, where the coral atolls, translucent waters and powder white beaches rival anywhere in the world.
Costa Rica has recently become one of the eco tourism capitals of the world. It’s now great, and importantly very safe for families. Highlights include the Monteverde Cloud Forrest Reserve which is home to an estimated 100 species of mammal. Nearby is the lively Arenal volcano – don’t worry, it’s a safe experience but one that will not be forgotten! Here too there are stunning beaches, coves and national parks.
For families venturing into South America, Ecuador is a must! A relatively small country, but a fascinating experience. You can check out the vast Amazon rainforest, the facilitating city of Quito and of course the Galapagos Islands.
